I have more than recovered from the big spring sale and suddenly found myself obsessed with these big stacks of bricks in my yard.  I have a bit of the packrat syndrome in me and when we remodeled four years ago I saved stuff, as in hundreds of old bricks.  Who knew they would become a condo unit for slugs.  It's true.  I digress.

Anyway, I took it upon myself to build a brick patio for the grill that I drug in from the alley. I do a lot of shopping in my alley. That is another story though.

With no skills and lots of determination and some help from my friends I have built my patio!

My husband is not a handy man so he supplied moral support, cash, ice tea and sandwiches.  It works out best this way.  We agree on this.  It helped to have a week of no humidity and less than 90 degree temperature and my trusty "Neighbor of the Month" Liz.  The pictures of us are less than feminine.  Liz wouldn't have it any other way.  When you are doing this kind of work all thoughts of lip gloss and kitten heels fly out the window anyway.

Did I say ice tea?  Hmmm......

I have more to do on this project but I really need to get my attention back to the potato factory.  I am going to do my darn best to devote some time each day to this blog.  If folks start to enjoy it and I actually get involved in nice photos and interesting stuff to share it may work into a place to visit often on your trips to the web!

Since the is the beginning of such a commitment to this blog, I thought I would get the ball rolling with a  giveaway of a $50 gift certificate to Hot Potatoes!  Just make a comment on the blog and tell me what project you want to accomplish this summer and by Friday June 27th at 9:00 p.m. Central Time I will pick a winner with a random generator draw. I will announce the winner on Saturday on this blog.

A winner will be announced later today...Monday!

Hi!
By the end of this summer, I want to have a whole bunch of tshirts decorated in a unique style, that since they will be made by me, no one else will have. Through your website, I discovered that there is better fabric paint out there than the dimensional paint that comes in tube/bottles. Thanks!

When my mother passed away she left my brother with lots of Japanese pieces of fabric (the kind they wear around their head when they make sushi). My brother wants me to piece these together to make a quilt. However, I am not a quilter. The fabric has been in my craft room since last Xmas. I really need to get this project done so that it is not looming over me anymore! Pray it comes out looking half way decent! LOL

I love your patio, you can take a bow! I have a very long list of home improvement projects to update my home. My FAVORITE project, while it is taking forever, is nearly done. I am building a craft room/sewing room in my basement. I emptied a large storage closet, laid a fake wood floor, painted the walls an outrageous green and then painted 2 and 3 foot poppies on the wall in bright red and black. I got large steel grids from a store that went out of business and painted them glossy black and filled them with hooks and baskets (also from the now defunked World Market) and just need to add a ceiling, finish the trim along the bottom of the walls and I will get my sewing machine out of my bedroom for the first time in my whole life. I'll also have room for my jewelry work, stamps and kiln I'm so excited! (I can send a photo now and one when it is done - the poppies are pretty wild).

Congrats on the patio! I wear the tool belt in the family and my husband loves to brag about it! (The part that he does not do, I mean.) Anyway, my projects have moved indoors, as I have just finished an English garden project in my front yard. I would like to start and finish my kitchen curtains, the only room in our home with naked windows. Before that though I need to paint the new fence. My crafty project is making cards for the holidays out of handmade paper with my three children. Happy Projects All!

I think your patio project is terrific. My husband and I are remodeling a home we bought and
since I was a carpenter's daughter, I am doing most of the work. I poured my first concrete steps last summer. This summer I am busy trying to finish the inside of the house so we can finally get moved in. I too have a pile of bricks and cinder blocks which have been put aside, so that when we finish the inside and get moved in, I can build a patio leading out of the french doors of the dining room. My idea is to try to link the indoors with the outdoors. Wish me luck.

I love outdoor landscaping projects and since we have a relatively new home, its a never ending process. Unfortunately, my summer project involves having a (stupid) garage sale to get rid of the stuff we kept for who knows what reason, and who knows why we moved it! As much as I hate garage sales, I do love to purge and get rid of stuff, so in the end, I'll be happy.

Project: Just about anything that I could get done would be amazing. Actually I started a cross stitch quilt for my daughter when she was 4. It is now the running joke that I will never finish it--she turns 40 on Monday. So I promise to finish the quilt and give it to her this summer--it has Bambi and all Bambi's friends on it!

The patio looks great Mary! I did a similar project some years ago. My project this year is to rid that patio of all the weeds that have come up in the last 2 years. You did a great job on that patio and it highlights beautifully the screened porch (I'm a sucker for screened porches!). And given that I'm the stone mason in the family (my husband does everything else luckily) I speak with way more experience than I ever expected. This summer I'd really like to finish the room above the garage which will be a dedicated exercise space. We're down to sanding the sheetrock and taping and as soon as my other half gives the green light, I'm ready to start painting! Want I want to accomplish this summer by maureen

I promised, for my part, to put in the wallpaper. Oh, I'm good at selecting it, make no mistake about that. It's a really cool black and beige oversized bamboo pattern paper. Anyway, i'm a rubber stamper, and quilter, my stamp projects are caught up, but not my quilting ones, so i have some quilts to finish.

Your first blog and my first time blogging.
I think you are brave to have started your patio project. It looks great. Hope the lip is better.
My project this summer was to do some deep cleaning in the house, since Texas weather is too hot for outside projects. But so far, I've spent most of my time running my 14 year old daughter/grand-daughter to volleyball pratice and strength training. So, I've desided it if gets done great. if not, then I'll just stamp. There is always time to stamp. Have a great summer you all.

God Bless you for your patience to all the projects you start and finish. Love your patio and the friendship you have. My project is to secure all the items in my mom's house and pack them up for her granddaughters and her 3 great-grandchildren. After that is done, I will get back to my stamping.

That patio is much more ambitious than my plans. I too am a pack rat, so one of my plans is to have a yard sale and try to begin being less of a pack rat. I also, am trying to reclaim my garden that I had not worked in in 3 years... so lots of grass and weeds have taken over. Good luck and I look forward to future reading!!

You are awesome! I love the patio! We just finished ours and the shade cover as well. My next project is working on the sod and plants for the rest of the yard. I put in a bike path for the kids and need bump friendly plants to put on one side, hopefully something that smells good when you go by that wont hurt my curious dog. Maybe I should just stamp up a bunch of velvet leaves and flowers? That would be easy on the water bill, lol!

I would love to be able to make the time to sew the baby blankets I love to create. I put them off as a wife, mother, housekeeper, refree, shuttlebus driver, and teacher of my children. So as you can see time for me to create is very little, but it gives me great joy. It seems that I'm always rushing to beat the clock to have a gift ready when needed. Sooo, my goal is to lose 25 lbs, in turn have more energy so I can make a few baby blankets, and start on a quilt that I've been collecting material for so long, yet have put off for other priorities. I love to create, but have so little time to get what I want to get done, done. So if I complete my task, I will be overflowing with joy, and my summer will have been quit full. Lisa

This is also my first for blogs.

The patio looks wonderful, so the effort was definitely worthwhile. My project of the summer is organizing my craft room and garage. I still have about a dozen unpacked boxes left in my garage from consolidating several houses down to one. And I've been using my craft room as an office for the last few years and have not managed to keep it organized, so every time I walk in there I want to cry because it's a mess but I don't know where to start. Hi Mary,
I like your new patio. I'm always impressed when I see a big project like that done by a female. I like to do indoor projects- like wall painting.
I'm sorry about your lip. I can't believe the doctors have no clue about why it's like that.
My project this summer is to start-and finish, a scrapbook/photo album of my parent's 50th wedding anniversary which was celebrated last summer. I thought I'd better get to it after my mom's health scare. Three months ago she had to have her aortic valve replaced, but once the doctor got in there he found an aneurism on her aorta and she had to have part of it replaced. We were all taken by surprise as she showed no signs of heart problems. She's doing great now and is back to normal activities.
I wasn't able to see her while in the hospital because I live in Hawaii. I'm visiting my parents in Michigan as I write this.
I hope your lip gets better soon, Mary.

Now, as for my project this summer--I have just retired (from school-teaching!) and I am cleaning house from all bits of my old working life and making way for the new fun life I now have ahead of me (rubber stamping and scrapping!) I am re-organizing my craft room and making my guest bedroom (aka former junk room) liveable again. I liked what I read. I hope we can see the patio when it is all finished. I'm not creative in that way.

What am I doing this summer that is crafty or otherwise? Getting ready for some craft shows in the fall and winter. I rubber stamp on clothing, mostly shirts. I also stamp on pillow cases and wooden purses and canvas purses. I like to get really creative and embellish my stuff with buttons and flowers, sequins and glitter. I also make greeting cards and I love to embellish them too. I am also involded in some card swaps so I have them to do them too. I think besides stamping and making jewelry I will be pretty busy. Plus going on line to read what everyone else has to say. I hope everyone will be as busy as I am.

By the way, I love the stamps that I got. My sister was mad cause I bought the stamps and didn't tell her you were having a sale. I am going to send her the e-mail about the sale you are having now.

Living in the mess as we work hasn't been fun but our list of completed projects is getting longer. We've designed, scraped, stained, painted, tiled, plumbed and just about everything else through this process and we still love each other. So many projects, which to choose? I hope we can finish the patio area so we have a lovely place to rest our weary bones from time to time. In Honeoye NY the summer goes too quickly so we have to work fast. I live in Florida so you know that projects are likely due to heavy rains. On Friday the 13th!!! It rained so hard that our streets were flooded with 3 feet of water which some ended in my car and caused my ceiling to collapse in 2 places. Soooooooo, my project this summer is to fix my ceiling. My fun project is to finish the "Family" cookbook I am making as Christmas gifts for the women of my family! I miss you on TV and miss Carol Duvall. Wouldn't it be great if they could do a special with all of you!!!

My hope for this summer is to survive the grandkids. Thanks to stamps and other crafts we're able to keep them busy for a time. Funny how 5 minutes after completing a craft the cry "what are we going to do next?" arises. Hope the parents appreciate the memories that are being made for them with love and very messy fingers.

Oh Mary! Patio looks great. I have one of those husbands too, but he isn't content with providing me with needed comforts, wants to get involved in my projects; sounds good, but not so much if you know what I mean. The lip does look a bit scary but maybe it's your inspiration to create a rock n roll line of stamps, designs, and projects. There are so many of the old bands coming back into the public eye and the price of their shirts can be more than the ticket, alternative DIYs would be good! I thought about you when I was in Nashville in April for a Jovi concert. Would've looked you up but there wasn't time. As far as summer projects, I'm trying to chill out so my ulcer can heal (my stress result) and am trying to sort and organize my craft room which has become somewhat of a mess; that "work thing" keeps getting in my way!
My thoughts and prayers are with you as you push forward with your endeavors!

Hi Mary (my fellow namesake!)
Every year at summer vacation time (I work for an elementary school so I am one lucky gal to get the summers off) I plan a home improvement project. The last two were a complete re-do of our master bedroom (this last year) and the previous year was a complete re-do of the main hall bathroom. This year, I want to do the kitchen, and replace our fading old laminate countertops and sink and stove! My husband is wonderful at accomodating me with my projects and like yours contributes cash and both moral and physical support. We have been living in our home 10 years now and every year try to do a little something to help keep the house looking good. I love your brick patio and applaud you on your efforts. It looks great! We poured a cement patio a few years back and did a stone walkway and love how it made our backyard a wonderful place to spend with family and friends! I imagine yours will do the same. Keep up the good work on your site and thanks for sending out the blog reminders. Have a great summer!
P.S. and oh btw did I say how much I love your stamps? Smile

Oh Mary - I would like to do just what you did! We are getting a new covered and screened deck and getting some concrete removed and not quite sure what to do - and your brick project would fit the ticket perfectly! (I think our husbands must be cut out of the same cloth - I do the work and he supplies the $$ and it DOES work better that way!)

I actually have two summer projects. The first one is a scrapbook of all our travels over the past 43 years. My second project is to machine quilt a stack of 5 quilts waiting patiently in my studio. They all need to be sandwiched so that is my holdup but I will get it done. I DO NOT do outdoors in the summer...Barbara

Nice blog & nice patio...thanks for sharing your personal space with us in cyberspace!! I'm working on repairing the damage suffered in my craft room from the storms and flooding in our area so I can forge ahead on lots of stamping, sewing, and more. Happy summer & keep up the great work!

Way cool patio Mary! Nice job. I have started many projects this summer. I am ALmost done with reorganizing my craft room. I can send you pictures if you want. Anyway, now I have taken on organizing our DVD's. My husband and I love movies and it seems that we love to collect them too. Well we have a wall unit that use to fit only VHS tapes. Now with a little ingenuity, some plexi glass, and that wonderful red tape the cabinet now accommodates DVD's. I am ALmost done with that project too. Therefore, my next project after all that is done is to actually USE my newly organized craft room and PLAY! Continue this blog Mary it is fun. Hey tell us more about your lip.

WOW So great to get your newsletter. The patio is awesome. Enjoyed the blog. Sorry to hear about your allergy. Hope that is not happening very often. Have you tried keeping a diary of things like foods, outdoor activities so you can get an idea if there is a pattern that the allergy follows? Sometimes this will help determine what is causing the problem. I have been on your email list for years. I think the addition of a blog is a great idea.
Almost forgot to tell you my goal for the summer is to integrate the items that we got from my DH's (dear husband's) father's home after he died. There is way to much STUFF in my home now. Hope to have more tham paths through the stuff by September. LOL

Wow, I love the patio! I admit when we did a brick patio a few years ago we both watched and threw $$ at it! So my projects for the summer are pretty endless. This year we had 2 weddings, one in India and one in the states, a new granddaughter, high school graduation and all the other family activities and celebrations that come with a blended and extended family. I wouldn't have it any other way but I have had little time for my creativity.
The summer projects are make a quilt for the new baby. We didn't know the sex so I limited myself to bibs, taggies, blankets and burp clothes, now I can make a quilt just for Annika! A Christmas quilt for the newly weds, I stopped making wedding quilts several years ago since they always change their bedroom style over the years but Christmas is always Christmas!
I love the blog and will visit very often!

So many projects and so little time. First we are redoing our front interior entry steps. They have the unattractive rolled over carpet on the edge(very 70's in a bad way). So, our hope is to add an oak edge and then replace carpet with a new neutral color and get rid of the very old and very ugly seafoam green carpet that we have lived with for 15 years. Next is repairing the deck. I stained new cedar boards and they have been cut to length, still need to screw down and re-satin entire deck to match. I have a community garden plot brimming with veggies and berries that is an ongoing annual project. And, I am attempting to make moss covered topiary cones to place in urns and maybe add some brass fine wire an some beads at a home decor project. So many pictures in my mind. I also just finished 18 rooms of faux painting in 3 model homes for a large builder. Whew!

Loved your brick patio. I plan on the same in our next house. So much easier to care for than a wood deck.

Hope you kisser is healed!!!

Mary, your patio looks marvelous!! Very cool and brave of you....I have a husband who can do and build anything....I on the other hand, get dizzy on a ladder, and lost in a box!

An aside for your lip....I am a big user of acupuncture...helped me with my plantar's fascitis and my husband with his gout. If the doctors are stymied...give it a try...don't worry, the needles are so small you don't even feel them. Take care, Jeannine

You patio looks great. We just finished a 6 month project of adding a garage, back porch and patio. We also planted trees and grass in the backyard. My husband did a gorgeous stained concrete floor in the new garage. This summer I'd love to replant the gardens in the front of the house -- right after the plumbers finish running a new sewer line and the painters finsh painting the outside. It never ends.

That swelling reminds me of when I got hives on a trip to North Carolina. I woke up in Charlotte looking like Bart Simpson, with my mouth all swollen. I had to go to an urgent care clinic and get a shot of benedryl and prednisone. We never found out for sure what did it but I suspect an allergy to penicillin that I had taken the week before. Good luck.

May I give you MY address...I want a new patio! Yours looks fab and much jealousy is happening right now in Iowa. This summer I want to strip my kitchen cabinets & either stain or paint them, depending on whether there is actual wood underneath all the layers of grungy paint. New hand-stamped curtains & paint on the walls will be a blessing, if I don't run out of energy. Congrats on the blog. It will be interesting to see what the Potato Princess is up to next. Good luck and enjoy your beautiful patio.

Ms Mary - Your patio looks great! I'm planning on getting two projects completed this August in Seattle. 1)Fix our master bedroom from flood damage. We had terrible flooring in December and our master bedroom is in the basement. So we've had to haul our bedroom upstairs and now we can get our new flooring. All the mold is gone and new walls to be in place soon. Fun! 2) finish our backyard patio. This has been on the 'honey-do' list for 5 years. Our 18 year-old son, Ryan, has now taken over the idea of finishing the patio, so we'll have a great time working together on this project! Woo-Hoo - can't wait and your picitures are such a great inspiration! thanks for sharing and for the blog!

Excellent job with the patio. We are working on the walkway from the backyard to the front of the house in the same style but getting my hubby to finish is not easy. We are having temps of 113 so that is his excuse. My project goal for the summer is to finish my craft room so I can get some cards made for fall and winter birthdays, plus get back to my quilting projects. Since my project is inside, I don't have any excuses about the heat.

Love the blog!

I just love the patio and appreciate the effort it takes to finish something like that. I've moved most of my craft supplies out of my daughter's room (my former craft room) but need to sift and sort and reorganize all of it. While I'm doing that I should be finding more unfinished projects that can be completed and listed on my website. I'm looking forward to reading your blog, Mary!

Love your blog and your patio. Sorry about the swelling.

My next project is a painted rug for my back porch. The porch is already painted to look like a cottage at the beach which means my work can be pretty primitive. Good thing since this will be my first painted rug.

NICE job for a "potato-lip" girl! We built a nice cottage garden fence with the purty white plastic stuff via a new power tool at my house this year - my newly wedded husband! We were married May 11th, and I now have a beautiful garden that will be hopefully have a garden in it ... next year! Love your style, Mary. Keep it up.

Love the patio. You are amazing, working with paint and irons and bricks--you are very versatile! My project for the summer is to get my daughters room painted. We've lived here for 10 years--she has two years to graduation--so I'd better get done. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love your patio. It looks all ready for summer BBQ's. Last August we remodeled our kitchen. Now it is almost July and is still not finished. I hope to get it finished soon so I can reclaim my patio which now looks like a construction zone. Happy Summer.
P.S. Our kitchen is mostly done. All the appliances are installed and working. We just have trim work to finish.

we've already completed two major projects this summer-1. removing overgrown bushes along our driveway, then putting down sod; 2. removing the 80's wall of mirror in the living room.

The next on the list are-1. removing wallpaper in the living room and sewing new curtains; 2. painting the master (I bought a very pretty silver gray paint)

I love seeing you on TV, you're such great fun.
